PENTATONE

PENTATONE enjoys a reputation of excellence, reflected in its catalogue - one of the largest collections in high-end, multichannel surround-sound recordings - comprising some of the very best that classical music has to offer.

Overview

It all started with a revolutionary vision: that 5-channel surround sound will gradually replace today's stereo sound. In the beginning of the year 2000, this was unheard of. More than a decade later, PENTATONE is continuously realising the vision, by pushing boundaries to produce the highest quality recordings in 5-channel surround sound. The vision was crystal clear: to offer an unrivalled classical music experience through superior audio technology. The introduction of 5-channel surround sound, which made this experience possible, came at a time when classical music sales were suffering.

PENTATONE's founders were unwilling to compromise their vision - so convinced were they of the new technology that they launched their own label in 2001.

Together with talented artists, PENTATONE takes pride in its work, providing an impeccable way of experiencing classical music. For all its diversity, its artists have one thing in common - they all put their heart and soul into the music, drawing on every last drop of creativity, skill, and determination to perfect their compositions.

An unrivalled classical music experience through superior audio technology.

Recording of Shostakovich Symphony No. 7 with the Russian National Orchestra & Paavo Järvi nominated for a Grammy.

One of PENTATONE's first successful projects was the recording of the music played at the wedding ceremony of King Willem-Alexander of The Netherlands in 2002. It was released on the day of the wedding, sold over 75,000 copies, topping the pop charts in Holland for several weeks. PENTATONE is particularly proud of the production of the Grammy-nominated recording of Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 7 with the Russian National Orchestra under the baton of Paavo Järvi. Paavo Järvi is the proud winner of the Gramophone Award for Artist of the Year 2015.

One of PENTATONE's highlights worth mentioning was recording the 10 major Wagner operas with the conductor Marek Janowski when the Rundfunk Sinfonieorchester Berlin decided to program all of Wagner’s operas during three seasons of concert performances. Never before had a record company recorded all of Wagner’s operas with the same orchestra, choir and conductor. This project became possible when the Rundfunk Sinfonieorchester Berlin decided to program all of Wagner’s operas during three seasons of concert performances. Marek Janowski, the orchestra’s music director, felt that in Berlin’s three opera houses, too much attention was paid to the mis en scene. He wanted to enable audiences to listen to the music that Wagner composed without being distracted by the influence of the stage directors and set designers that can detract from the music.

A Realm of Internationally Acclaimed Artists

For all their diversity, the artists featured on PENTATONE have one thing in common. They all put their heart and soul into the music, drawing on every last drop of creativity, skill, and determination to perfect their compositions.

PENTATONE’s catalogue includes performances by conductors Kent Nagano, Sir Neville Marriner, Sir Colin Davis, Yakov Kreizberg, Simon Murphy, Marc Albrecht and Marek Janowski. Their recording instrumentalists include Grammy award-winning Julia Fischer, Mari Kodama, Arabella Steinbacher, Martin Helmchen and Nareh Arghamanyan to name a few.

German-Canadian international soloist Johannes Moser recently signed an exclusive recording contract with PENTATONE. For his debut album with PENTATONE Johannes chose to record the pinnacle of the repertoire for cello and orchestra, the Cello Concerto by Antonín Dvořák. In this monumental work Dvořák explores the entire spectrum of human emotion, very much inspired by his own experiences, ranging from exhilarating bursts of life in New York City to the devastating tragedy of his unfulfilled love. They work closely with orchestras such as Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, The Russian National Orchestra, Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin, The Wiener Symphoniker, The Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra, Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen and the Bolshoi Theatre.
