Anton Stadler was born in Bruck an der Leitha, Austria. He became a close friend of Mozart, and a catalyst for championing new challenging repertoire for the clarinet. Mozart wrote the Clarinet Concerto for Stadler in 1791. The clarinet was still undergoing rapid evolution, and Stadler played it in its original form on a basset horn in G, which reached lower than the range of the more usual clarinets in B flat or A.
