Czech composer Bedrich Smetana wrote in his diary: ‘By the grace of God and with his help I will one day be a Liszt in technique and a Mozart in composition’. Although critics acknowledged that Smetana possessed a “delicate, crystalline touch" at the piano, he was also physically frail, which hindered his concert-pianist ambitions and he was generally considered less capable than his contemporaries. As a composer, he will always be remembered for being the first Czech nationalist composer, responsible for creating a voice for Czech musical expression.
