Jonas Kaufmann

Jonas Kaufmann is a German operatic tenor, best known for his opera roles as Don José in Carmen, Cavaradossi in Tosca and the titular role in Don Carlos. Kaufmann is also an accomplished recitalist.

Jonas Kaufmann was born in Munich where he learned to play piano at a young age and often listened to his grandfather perform Wagner opera arias at the piano. The Bavarian State Opera offered a series of children’s performances, which Jonas and his sister often attended.

Kaufmann began his vocal training at the University of Music and Performance, during which time he began taking on small roles at the Bavarian State Opera.

Kaufmann began his professional career at Staatstheater Saarbrucken in 1994. He was soon invited to perform at many opera houses such as the Stuttgart Opera (during the year in which this particular opera house was named Opera House of the Year) and the Hamburg State Opera, at the Lyric Opera of Chicago, Opéra National de Paris and La Scala in Milan.

The following decade he gave critically acclaimed performances at Covent Garden: in the 2006/7 opera season in the role of Don José in Bizet’s Carmen and the following year as Cavaradossi in Puccini’s Tosca.

Kaufmann’s début album with Decca, Romantic Arias, was released in 2008. He soon recorded Schubert song cycles with Decca followed by Madama Butterfly for EMI records.
