Canary Classics

Canary Classics is the record label of the renowned violinist Gil Shaham. Established in 2003, label is noted as one of the very first artist-owned labels.

Overview

Canary Classics allows Gil Shaham the artistic freedom to collaborate where he feels the musical synergy. The name Canary refers to both the songbird and ‘canar’, the Hebrew word for violinist. Canary Classics is considered to be a ‘family business’ and continues to grow at the rate of 2 or 3 recordings per year. It allowed Gil Shaham to work and record with close musical friends and family. His sister Orli Shaham has recorded for the label, along with his wife, violinist Adele Anthony, as well as conductor David Robertson, music director of the St. Louis Symphony. The director happens to be the husband of the founder’s sister.

Gil Shaham plays it all with passionate intensity.

Repertoire

Canary Classics' repertoire ranges from early music to contemporary. The label features Gil Shaham’s as well as other artists remarkable interpretations of great composers including Bach, Britten, Stravinsky, Sibelius, Tchaikovsky, Fauré, Prokofiev, Haydn, Mendelssohn and Mozart. Gil Shaham collaborates with renowned soloists, ensembles and orchestras, such as the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
