Press Quotes

The Guardian

“Janowski's dramatic instincts and his ability to obtain orchestral playing of great intensity and presence are as keenly honed as ever – there are some thrilling interludes in this Rheingold.” (May 2013)

Sunday Times

“Above all, this is Janowski’s triumph. His decision to focus on the music at the expense of theatrical ideas has been criticised, but he is vindicated by the gripping, dramatic playing here.” (June 2013)

Musicweb

“This Rheingold finds [Janowski] at his best. He uses his preference for fast speeds to his advantage to make the drama buzz along from one exciting episode to another. [The orchestra] take every opportunity to reveal Wagner’s score in all its astounding, delectable colour, as if holding it up to the light for fresh examination.” (July 2013)

BBC Music Magazine

“This is superbly recorded, mainly wonderfully played , interestingly conducted and reasonably well sung." (August 2013)

Gramophone

“The real secret ingredient here is the conductor himself. What was a little too calm and remote in the earlier Dresden recording now has real cojones. This is both a great start to Janowski's new Ring cycle and a competitive Rheingold in its own right.” (September 2013)

Album information

Among the events around the 200th anniversary of Richard Wagner’s birth, the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, in 2010, embarked on a project to record Wagner’s ten most important operatic works under the baton of Marek Janowski.

The operas were recorded live in concert versions, enabling the listener exclusively to concentrate on the music. The concept behind this critically acclaimed cycle is as disarmingly simple as it is ingenious: to present only what Wagner himself has to say.

Das Rheingold is the awe-inspiring 7th release in PentaTone’s unique Wagner Edition and the first to occur during the Wagner Year. A colossal artistic vision of the emergence and decline of a world, Das Rheingold is the first of the Ring Cycle’s four pillars.
